Most of the surrounding farmlands have been converted into the residential area of Constantia, but Groot Constantia in Constantia Valley, the oldest wine-making centre in South Africa, is government controlled, preserved as a national monument. Early Cape Governor Simon van der Stel's homestead today houses antique furniture and paintings. The wine cellar, today converted into a wine museum, houses drinking vessels from Greek antiquity, and early wine-making processes may be seen .
