48 km west of Pretoria. Agricultural centre which flourished after the construction of the Haartbeespoort Dam. Produces tobacco, wheat, fruit, vegetables and flowers. Also a border industry area. The Peace Tree, an old karee tree, 9 km from Brits, is the site under which the Peace Treaty ending the Transvaal Civil War was signed on 15 Jan. 1864. Plaque and memorial mark the spot.
