MONTEBELLO

The Outaouais offers the perfect mix of proximity and diversity. There is something for everybody: nature lovers, foodies, culture and history buffs. The easternmost territory in the Outaouais is a prime destination for those in search of an authentic local experience. In May 1855, Louis-Joseph Papineau named his property "MonteBello", and in 1878, the town was officially founded. The spirit of the Papineau family can still be left at the Manor, in the family burial chapel and in the village, where history has been well preserved. Located on the bank of the Ottawa River and with two marinas, it's a top vacation spot offering a wide array of activities, including golf, horseback riding, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, hiking,  hunting and fishing. It's also home to two very popular attractions, the Château Montebello and Parc Omega.

ABITIBI

Abitibi is immediately to the east of Ontario, between to 47th and 49th parallel, not entirely north of Montreal, as some people like to say, but rather west of it. It's a land of 22,000 lakes and rivers, sometimes immense and deep, that abound in various fish species. It's an unspoiled landscape shaped by glaciers that caused rare geological formations, such as eskers that filter the purest water on earth. The region is considered as the walleye and northern pike fisherman's paradise. Sport fishing enthusiasts travel a long distance to catch and feast on species of game fish. It is also the natural habitat of moose and black bear. Hunting and fishing are longstanding traditions here.

GATINEAU

Gatineau (Quebec’s fourth-largest city), until recently known as Hull, is based just across the river from Ottawa in the province of Quebec, and, as a result, many federal bureaucracies have their headquarters here. For years, Gatineau has been a more relaxed and fun-loving counterpart to the capital. From Hull’s establishment in 1800, the city’s liquor laws were far more lenient than Ottawa’s, and so this was where Ottawa politicians came to party (the city still has a lower drinking age). Gatineau contains one of Canada’s best museums, the Canadian Museum of Civilization, which provides a fascinating tour of Canada’s history over the past 1,000 years.

OTTAWA

Ottawa is Canada's capital city. Perched on the border between Ontario and Quebec, it combines the best of both cultures - with a few others thrown in for good measure. Ottawa charms you with its natural beauty, graceful architecture, fine museums and simple pleasures. It blends urban sophistication, natural beauty and joie de vivre. Year round, it's a destination like no other.

The gothic Parliament Buildings, set on a bluff high above the Ottawa River, dominate the skyline. Three Gothic stone buildings roofed with green copper form Canada's seat of government. The centre block is crowned by the 92 m Peace tower with a carillon of 53 bells. A white light burns on top of the tower when Parliament is in session, and an eternal flame burns in front of the buildings as a symbol of Canada's 100 years of nationhood. For one thing, it's the highest point for miles and the view from behind Parliament House is excellent.
