Grew from military camp established at close of Mexican War and named for General W. J. Worth. After the Civil War, became major shipping and supply depot for cattlemen. Today Fort Worth is one of Texas' major cities with a wide range industries including Lockheed, American Airlines, and Burlington Northern. An 1887 gunfight between White Elephant owner Luke Short and former U.S. Marshall Jim Courtright gave the White Elephant a permanent place in Fort Worth history. Offering cold beer, cocktails, and live Texas music seven nights a week, the White Elephant Saloon continues to provide the Western hospitality that made “Hell’s Half Acre” famous.
