DARTMOUTH

 CITY OF LAKES

Dartmouth is Nova Scotia second largest city. Founded in 1750, Dartmouth is linked by two bridges to its twin city, Halifax. Known as "The City of Lakes" because of the 23 lakes found within its boundaries offering warm water swimming, boating, canoeing and water skiing. Nearby are the salt water beaches of Lawrencetown and Cow Bay. Tourist attractions in Dartmouth include Shubenacadie Canal, dating from the 1850's, now a public park with walking trails and interpretive signs along the canal banks; the Black Cultural Centre of Nova Scotia which chronicles the history of  Nova Scotia's black Settlers; and Lake Banook, location of canoe races, wind surfing venue and two public beaches. On the Dartmouth side is Alderney Landing Park, a strip of green that looks out to sea and is the location of music concerts during the summer months.

SPALDING

Spalding is a bustling Georgian Market Town set around the picturesque River Welland and situated within the South Lincolnshire Fens, approximately 105 miles north of London. The settlement’s name is derived from an Anglian tribe, the Spaldingas, who settled in the area during the 6th century. Surrounded by dikes and streams and counting seven bridges in its town center, it has a Dutch feel, reinforced by tulip fields in Springfield Gardens and its Flower Parade in early May. The parade celebrated the region’s vast tulip production and the cultural links between the Fens and the landscape and people of South Holland. Spalding has a surplus of small but worthwhile attractions, like Britain’s tallest windmill, an authentic blacksmith’s forge and Medieval churches. It is quite a special part of Lincolnshire and most definitely worth visiting numerous times.

PERTH

Western Australia’s pretty capital is the most isolated city in the world. The city of Perth lies on the Swan River, just 20 km from where it flows into the Indian Ocean. The coastal plain on which it stands is bordered to the north and west by the Darling Range, beyond which lie the region’s wheat fields. To the south is a diverse landscape: forests with some of the tallest trees on earth, mountains that dramatically change colour during the course of each day and a spectacular coastline. The history of Perth has been one of building and rebuilding. Perth is a relatively small and quiet city compared with those on the east coast. Its main commercial and shopping areas can be easily explored on foot. The city’s atmosphere is brisk but not hurried. The city centre is bordered to the south and east by a wide stretch of the Swan River known as Perth Water, and to the north lies Northbridge, Perth’s restaurant and entertainment centre.

In this view, the rapid development and progress of this flourishing city is symbolised by dramatic modern skyscrapers which dominate the city line.

Established at the end of the 19th century, King's Park is 400 ha of both wild and cultivated parkland. Situated on Mount Eliza, it offers views of the city and the Swan River. Most of the park is bush land, which can be seen from the DNA Tower. A landscaped parkland area on the eastern side includes the 17 ha Western Australian Botanic Garden. Treetops Walkway, a 629-m-long elevated walkway, gives another perspective of the garden. The State War Memorial on Anzac Bluff is dedicated to the Western Australians who died in the two world wars.

It is the most important administrative, agricultural, commercial, industrial and tourist centre in the Eastern Free State. BARABOO

Baraboo, 13 miles to the south of Wisconsin Dells, attracts visitors with Circus World Museum. The city was the hometown of the "Ringling Brothers". Their famous circus wintered  there at the turn of the century. Just outside Baraboo, Devil's Lake State Park is a geologic gem. Created by the glaciers, the park's spring-fed lake is surrounded on three sides by 500-foot-high bluffs. Beautiful Devil's Lake was named Minnewaukan by the Indians, meaning Evil Spirit. The unusual echos in the area created a mistrust of the lake and the Indians feared to camp here. The Lake, a mile and a quarter long is simingly dwarfed by sheer cliffs standing as sentinels around it.

ORKNEY

The green isles of Orkney have a Viking heritage and more prehistoric sites than anywhere else in Britain. The main town, Kirkwall, has a number of fine buildings. Orkney also has spectacular bird and seal colonies, plus a more recent heritage as a watering station for polar expeditions and as a naval base - Scapa Flow. On tiny Lambholm is the remarkable Italian Chapel built by Italian POW during World War II out of scrap material.
The Italian Chapel consists of two Nissen huts transformed into a beautiful chapel by Domenico Chiocchetti and his colleagues, Italian prisoners of war captured in North Africa and transported to the Island of Lamb Holm in Orkney. It is one of Orkney's most loved attractions, with over 100,000 visitors every year.

ARMAGH

One of Ireland’s oldest cities, Armagh dates back to the age of St Patrick and the advent of Christianity. The narrow streets in the city centre follow the ditches that once ringed the church, founded by the saint in 455. Two cathedrals, both called St Patrick’s, sit on opposing hills. The huge Roman Catholic one is a twin-spired Neo-Gothic building with seemingly every inch of wall covered in mosaic. The older Anglican Cathedral dates back to medieval times.  It boasts the bones of Brian Ború, the King of Ireland who defeated the Vikings in 1014, and an 11th-century High Cross. Armagh’s gorgeous oval, tree-lined Mall, where cricket is played in summer, is surrounded by dignified Georgian buildings. The Armagh Planetarium  is on College Hill in the Observatory Grounds, from where there are splendid views over the city.

DARWIN

Darwin is the Northern Territory’s capital city with an immigrant population of more than 50 nationalities, including Asian-born Australians, Aboriginals, Europeans, particularly Greeks, and Chinese. Darwin itself is a city that has fought hard to survive. In its short history, it has experienced the gold rush of the 1890s, life as an Allied frontline during World War II and almost total destruction in 1974. Despite having been twice rebuilt, it has grown into a multicultural modern city, with a relaxed atmosphere, great beauty and a distinctly Asian feel. It is small and colourful. The climate is hot, but the dry season has low humidity, making it the best time to visit.

Attractive Smith Street, one of the city's main business area

The heart of Darwin’s shopping area is Smith Street Mall, with its glass air-conditioned plazas shaded by tall tropical trees. Always full of buskers, tour operators offering trips, locals and visitors, the mall is a favourite meeting place. Noteworthy buildings include the 1890 Victoria Hotel, one of the few old structures in town to survive Cyclone Tracy. During the dry season, many outdoor events are held at Raintree Park, at the northern end of the mall.

COTSWOLD

Marked by rolling uplands, green fields, and limestone cottages with prim flower beds, the Cotswolds, 100 miles west of London, make a peaceful getaway. The towns and villages set around the Cotswold escarpment - a swath of golden, creamy or gray-colored stone, stretching from Stratford-upon-Avon south west to Cirencester and beyond - owe their beauty to sheep, or rather, the wool on their backs. The wealth created by the wool industry built stately, large-windowed, light-filled churches in every town and country parish. The Cotswolds region is justly famous for tranquil, stone-built villages.  There’s little to do in idyllic villages, but that’s the point. Exquisite gardens and stately homes add further charm.

CORK

Cork City is now the third largest city in Ireland. It derives its name from the marshy land on the banks of the River Lee – its Irish name Corcaigh means marsh –  on which St Finbarr founded a monastery around AD 650. The narrow alleys, waterways and Georgian architecture give the city a Continental feel. Since the 19th century, the city has had a reputation for political rebelliousness. Today this mood is reflected in the city’s attitude to the arts and its bohemian spirit, much in evidence at the lively October jazz festival.

Cork
St. Patrick's Street, Bridge and Hall, Cork City

One of Cork’s great attractions is that it is a city built on water. Its heart lies on an island between two arms of the River Lee and many of today’s streets were in fact once waterways lined with warehouses and merchants’ residences. Cork city offers a more cosmopolitan atmosphere, with its art galleries and craft shops.

HASTINGS

In the 19th century Hastings became one of England’s most popular spa resorts. Hastings is a mix of fishing port and unpretentious resort. Fishermen winch their boats onto the shingle beach below tall black sheds called deezes, where their nets are stored. Behind, weatherboard houses on narrow alleys characterize the old town.  A Victorian funicular railway takes you up to fragmentary ruins of a massive castle built by William, where the events of the Norman invasion unfold in a fake siege tent in The Story of 1066. The animated figures of the Smugglers' Adventure, set in caves once used for storing contraband, are also entertaining. The adjoining Regency resort of St. Leonards is a must for those with a fondness for backstreet antique shops.

FISHING BOATS AT HASTINGS, EAST SUSSEX

Tall Victorian row houses painted in lemony hues still cover the cliffs around the deep blue sea, and the views from the hilltops are extraordinary. The Old Town, on the east side of the city, offers a glimpse into the city’s 16th-century past. Hastings has been through difficult times in recent decades, and the town developed a reputation as a rough place. It’s handsome, if tattered, and the seafront has all the usual English accoutrements—fish-and-chips stands, candy stores, shops selling junk, miniature golf, and rocky beaches that stretch for miles.

SUDBURY

 A City Built on Nickel

Sudbury is situated on the Canadian Shield in the Great Lakes Basin and is composed of a rich mix of urban, suburban, rural and wilderness environments. Travellers will be hard-pressed to find anything that matches Sudbury's unique combination of natural and created wonders. In the midst of the beautiful Canadian Shield landscape, the city lies in a vast geological basin that yields up  a wealth of precious metals - gold, silver, cobalt, platinum and nickel. In fact, Sudbury has the largest-known concentration of nickel in the world.

The Big Nickel Replica is 24 inches thick and mounted on a base 12 ft. by 12 ft.and 5 ft. thick. CHARLOTTETOWN

Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island's capital city, is a charming blend of lovingly preserved 19th century buildings and the latest in shopping malls, nightclubs, cinemas and live theatre. The city was named for Charlotte, consort of King George III. Set on a sheltered harbour in the centre of the Island, the city is a perfect base for touring the rest of the province.

ENNISKILLEN

The busy tourist centre of Enniskillen occupies an island between Upper and Lower Lough Erne. The town gained fame for the wrong reason in 1987, when 11 people died in an IRA bomb attack, but it deserves a visit for its setting and sights.  At the west end of town stands Enniskillen Castle, dating from the 15th century. It houses Fermanagh County Museum and the Inniskilling Regimental Museum. Its most stunning feature, however, is the Watergate, a fairy-tale twin-turreted tower, best admired from the far bank of the river. Further west, Portora Royal School, founded in 1618, counts among its old boys the play-wrights Oscar Wilde and Samuel Beckett.
