BAY CITY

 Established in 1894; seat of Matagorda County. Today commercial center for farming, ranching, oil, and nuclear energy. Port on Colorado River Feeder Channel connecting with Intracoastal Canal; recreation on river includes boating, skiing, fishing and a 28-space RV park. On the bank of the Colorado River, park features 40 campsites with full-service RV hookups. Other facilities include jogging trail with a 10-station exercise course along the way, boat ramp, day pavilion, and fishing. Adjacent to park is Rio Grande Golf Course, a beautiful 18-hole Gary Player designed course.

HOT SPRINGS

Warm Waters, Warm Welcomes

The town of Hot Springs was founded as a frontier health spa, capitalizing on springs of warm mineral waters in Fall River Canyon. Under the surface of this beautiful river valley are six major thermal springs that have relaxed and rejuvenated the area's visitors for hundreds of years. The spring continue to feed Fall River, which winds through historic downtown Hot Springs. They played a pivotal role in the town's development over the years, which has positioned itself as a growing art mecca, cultural center and healing retreat.

Established in 1890, Evans Plunge Mineral Springs is the oldest tourist attraction in the Black Hill. This indoor natural spring pool maintain an average temperature of 87 degrees. Relax and replenish in the warm mineral waters. Try the waterslides, swing rings, kiddie pool, steam room and saunas at this year-round facility.

LAVA HOT SPRINGS

 Today, people from all over the world seek out the healing properties of the warm spring water, which is naturally filtered as it moves through five pools. During the summer, you can alternate between the hot springs and the city's (cool) pool and water slides. Many soakers top off their day with an elegant dinner at the historic Greystone Manor. If you're here in February, you'll be amazed by the number of people brave enough to tube down the freezing Portneuf River in just a costume, as part of Lava Hot Springs' annual Fire and Ice Winter Fest. The festival also features fire performers, wine tasting, karaoke contests, a chill cook-off, a casino night, and the exciting Running of the Bulls event. Nonstop fun for everyone, with water slides, a splash pad, hillside slides, and volleyball and basketball courts.

BLOOMINGTON

 Home of Indiana University, Bloomington is a hotbed of arts and culture in a scenic package. HUNTINGTON

HOUSTON

 Named after Sam Houston, general of Texas army that won independence from Mexico, and president of Republic of Texas. The city, largest in Texas and fourth largest in nation, has experienced phenomenal growth since a small riverboat landing was established on Buffalo Bayou by Allen brothers in August 1836. Today metropolis is industrial and financial hub for much of the state. It is one of nation's largest seaports, and headquarters of Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center. Major annual events include the Texaco Grand Prix in Oct.; Houston Industries' Power of Houston in Sept.; and the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo in Feb.

 Astrodome Convention Center - Complex includes Astrodome, Astrohall and Astroarena. Superlatives are required to describe the Astrodome. An 18-story building would fit inside the Astrodome. It's world's first air-conditioned domed stadium for baseball and football, and also accommodates basketball, boxing, conventions, rodeos, and almost any other entertainment or sporting event.

NASHVILLE

 Music and musicians are everywhere in Tennessee's Heartland, and nowhere more plentiful than in Nashville, "Music City USA". In the heart of Nashville's recording district, "Music Row", you can tour the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. The exciting Opryland USA complex on the edge of the city, is home to Opryland music-filled theme park. If you visit Nashville and miss the Opry, you may as well have stayed home.

 Tennessee State Capitol. Charlotte Ave., Tennessee's first permanent structure to serve as capitol continues today in that function. Architect William Strickland is burried within its walls. On the grounds is the tomb of James K. Polk, 11th President of the United States. The building, is one of 12 state capitols that does not have a dome.

NEW BERN

 Craven County,midway along North Carolina's lacework coastal fringe, is the ideal vacation spot for sunseeker and history buffs alike. Settled in 1710 by Swiss and German immigrants at the confluence of the Trent and Neuse rivers, New Bern is the second oldest town in the state. History abounds around every corner, with over 150 landmarks - some dating to the 18th century - representing variety of architectural periods. The centerpiece of restored historic district is Trylon Palace.

PORTLAND

 What makes Portland one of New England's most vibrant cities is its revivified and restored city center, working waterfront, historic Old Port district and abundant opportunities for outdoor activities with many walking and biking trails nearby. The Greater Portland region is a shopper's mecca. The small, independent shops and boutiques in Old Port offer a unique shopping experience and Made-in-Maine items. Sports enthusiasts can see the Portland Sea Dogs, the local professional baseball team, play at Hadlock Field in the heart of the city. CORPUS CHRISTI

 City is major deep-water port and one of Texas' most popular seacoast playground cities. First settlement began as frontier trading post founded 1839; obscure settlement until about 1845 when accelerated growth began. Institutions of higher learning are Del Mar College and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Seawall, with steps to the water, was built in the late 1930s as part of a major landfill that created Shoreline Boulevard and the popular "T" head docks for pleasure boats.

GLACIER

LAKE McDONALD, GLACIER NATIONAL PARK [1964]

The largest of over 250 lakes in the Park is 12 miles long, 1½ miles wide, and 400 feet deep and lies near the western entrance. Five prominent peaks in background are Vaught, Cannon, Brown, Edwards and Lincoln Peak. Since Glacier is essentially a wilderness Park and efforts are made to preserve its natural state, only a few roads penetrate the deep forests and canyons. However one of the main centers of activity conveniently accessible is the beautiful glacial Lake McDonald.

FARGO

 North Dakota's largest city, Fargo is a bustling metropolitan area in the midst of farm riches. Fargo has the state's only children's museum (Yunker Farm) and the biggest mall (West Acres), housing the Roger Maris Museum, which is dedicated to the Fargo native who hit more home runs in a year than did Babe Ruth.

The well-preserved historic downtown is where you can find the Fargo Theatre, a 1926 vaudeville and silent film-hall with a working "Mighty Wurlitzer" pipe organ. The art modern interior is a fitting place for art films, stage plays and second-run movies.
Attractions in Fargo include the Plains Art Museum, among others; great public and private golf courses; parks; pools and, on summer weekends, a variety of live performances at Trollwood Park.

DALLAS

 First Anglo-American settler at site of present metropolis built a single cabin in 1841. By mid-1870s, Dallas had become a thriving business town and market center with cosmopolitan, urbane air unmatched anywhere on the frontier at the time. Southwest's largest banking center, leader in wholesale business, second in nation for insurance company home offices, third in the nation in terms of "million-dollar" companies, and number two in convention business. "If it doesn't sell in Dallas, it won't sell", say buyers who come to some 32 wholesale fashion and home furnishing markets each year. Citizens pursue culture with almost as much enthusiasm as business. An excellent climate where fair skies, predominantly year round, encourage outdoor activities, especially water sports.

COEUR D'ALENE

 Coeur d' Alene, Idaho, the most renowned summer resort destination area in the Pacific Northwest. Summer days in Coeur d' Alene are fresh, shimmering, happy. WHEELING

 From its beginning as a pre-Revolutionary outpost, Wheeling gained fame as a western gateway, a world renowned center for the manufacture of steel and glass and the first capital of the new State of West Virginia. Today Wheeling has maintained its place as the region's hub, thanks to its central location, wealth of attractions, varied accommodations and rich heritage.

GRAND FORKS

 The oldest major city and perhaps the most cosmopolitan one in North Dakota, Grand Forks is home to the state's leading university and a major Air Force base. The North Dakota Museum of Arts and Chester Fritz Auditorium highlight the arts community of the state's second-largest city. The Center for Fine Arts and local galleries add to the cultural mix.
